Young is Old And Old is the Opposite of Itself

There is 1 character in this story who, for simplicity I (the narrator) will refer to in the following ways:

  • Current I: this is me, the narrator, and the oldest me (in age). I am sitting in a coffee shop writing to you, the reader. “Hello, nice to meet you.” says current I.

  • Current I II: This is a Current I too, but marked two, to keep things more straightforward. Current I won the one slot (Current I I) for being typed four seconds before Current I II.

  • Last week I: this is me too, but from last week.

  • Myself A few years ago: this is the oldest me, from longest ago.

  • We: all of us

  • You (scenario 1): this is you, as you are proofreading. Because I am the one proofreading this, you is me, but older than current age I. In this scenario, you wrote this. Good job!

  • You (scenario 2): this is the unlikely scenario where you is not me, and you is, in fact, a person different than me. In this scenario, I have shared this story with someone other than myself. Big mistake! Now there are 2 characters in the story, one of whom is not already in my head. “Welcome to my head,” says you (scenario 1). Good luck!

Current age I begins:

You (see above) may have read the title of this article and thought, “no.” or “that’s not right.” I used to be the same way. But then last week I ran into myself a few years ago. Last week I said “hello”, but a few years ago I didn’t even realize we were talking to myself last week. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had plenty of conversations with myself before. But before last week I ran into myself a few years ago, I’d always been the same age and at the same time as myself.

Current I (the narrator) remembers a particularly engrossing debate with same age, same time me (Current I II).  I was walking with me to a friends house when we got into a disagreement about if we should judge people who act crazy on the street. It got heated. Some yelling happened. By the time we got to the friends house, Current I and Current I II were no longer on speaking terms. But that’s a story for another day.

When last week I ran into myself a few years ago, last week I had to explain to myself a few years ago what was going on. So I told myself, “you’re the old me”. Me from a few years ago didn’t catch on, so last week I continued, saying “I’m the old you”. At that point, last week I realized the confusion: We were both old versions of ourself. I from last week had grown older than I from a few years ago. Meanwhile, since I am no longer the same as I was a few years ago, I from a few years ago is the old version of me, the way I used to be.

That’s when the confusions started. I simply couldn’t explain to me that we’re both old each other. So I gave up and never knew that a few years ago the old me talked to old me last week. Until last week we ran into each other and it all began again.

You (me reading) now realizes that current I (now I from a few minutes ago) did not stick to my own character list. That is confusing, and we apologize. Luckily we are all me, and I understood everything. Except a few years ago I never read this because it was not yet written.
